REPLACING A ZIPPER P ULL
1. DETERMINE THE TYPE OF ZIPPER
There are two types of zippers, either a coil type (nylon) or tooth type (metal or plastic).
2. DETERMINE THE TYPE OF ZIPPER SLIDER
If you have a worn or broken slider, then use the matching one from a zipper repair kit or purchase a zipper slider. If the slider is missing entirely, try different ones until one works. Often the zipper slider matches the material of the teeth, so that is a good place to start. For example, if your zipper has brass teeth, then swap in a brass zipper slider.
TO REPLACE A PULL ON A SEPARATING ZIPPER:
First work the slider to the bottom of the zipper, then separate the zipper. The slider will always be on the box side of the zipper. Remove the stop on the top of the slider side of the zipper and then remove the slider. Place the new slider on the zipper the same way the old one came off. Replace the stop and your zipper repair is complete.
TO REPLACE A PULL ON A NON-SEPARATING ZIPPER:
Sliders on Non-Separating Zippers must be taken off and put on from the bottom of the zipper. If a zipper is stuck, pry it in half with a pair of nippers. For Non-Separating Zippers with bottom stops, remove the stop with needle nose pliers.
Make a cut with nippers, as small as possible, between the teeth or across the coils on both sides of the zipper where the stop had been. This allows the old slider to be removed and the new one to be put on. If the stop is too difficult to reach, make the cut above the old stop. This, however, will shorten the zipper and require putting in an extra stop. On Non-Separating Zippers with no stop, the cut should be made 1/8˝ above the fabric where it meets the zipper. You may want to take out the stitches and re-stitch after replacing the slider.
After the old slider is removed, insert the new one by starting the teeth or coils evenly into the front or larger side of the slider. With the slider half on, push it with your index finger while holding on to each side of the zipper with your thumbs and middle fingers. Replace the stop or re-stitch to close and your zipper repair is complete.
