Zippers are the workhorses of sewing closures, enduring everything from the stress of an overpacked suitcase to the dirt and rain that gets in your camping gear. With so much wear and tear, it’s no wonder it’s not uncommon to see a zipper that doesn’t move easily—or at all. Fortunately, it's easy to get a zipper moving smoothly again and even extend its life with some simple maintenance. Read on to learn how to lubricate a zipper to keep your zippers in top shape, and visit WAWAK to find everything you need for zipper repair and more.

HOW TO LUBRICATE A ZIPPER
When Should You Lubricate A Zipper?
If your zipper is stuck, sticking, or not working as smoothly as it used to, it can probably benefit from a bit of lubricant. But lubrication isn't just for stuck zippers; it's also a great way to maintain a functioning zipper and help it operate more smoothly. If your zipper undergoes frequent or heavy use, is often exposed to the elements, or is on the older side (especially for metal zippers), it's a good idea to lubricate the zipper teeth regularly to keep them running smoothly. Even if your zipper is moving just fine and doesn't endure a lot of stress or debris, it can be beneficial to lubricate it now and then to prevent sticking and other issues down the line.
What Is The Best Lubricant For Zippers?
There are many DIY solutions for lubricating zippers, but commercial zipper lubricants yield the best results. WAWAK Zipper Lubricant is designed for zippers; it doesn't stain, is safe for all zipper coil types, and resists exposure to heat and water. Household products like petroleum jelly, oils or soap may work to lubricate or un-stick your zipper, but can stain the zipper tape or leave residue behind, and may not be safe for all zipper coil types.
Materials You'll Need:
We recommend using a commercial zipper lubricant like a WAWAK Zipper Lubricant Wax Stick for the best results.
Zipper cleaning solutions like YKK ZippyCool Cleaning Fluid are the ideal option for cleaning your zipper, as they're specially formulated to clean and lubricate all zipper coil types. If you don't have zipper cleaner on hand, a bit of water and gentle soap can also be used on items that are safe to wash.
3. Brush
Many commercial zipper cleaners come with a brush to clean your zipper. If you don't have one, a small, soft-bristled brush (like an old toothbrush) is a good option.
4. Soft Cloth
It's a good idea to have a soft rag, like a microfiber cloth, on hand to wipe away any excess moisture or lubricant.
How To Lubricate A Zipper Step-By-Step
1. Clean The Zipper
Before lubricating your zipper, you'll want to make sure it's clean. This step is especially important for zippers used in outdoor applications, but even indoor zippers can benefit from a quick clean before lubricating to keep them in top shape.
Using the included brush, remove any larger debris from the zipper teeth, such as sand, mud and salt deposits. If possible, rinse and dry the zipper. Apply zipper cleaner to the zipper teeth using the brush, gently scrubbing the inside and outside of the teeth with the cleaning solution.
Using Soap & Water
Mix a small amount of mild soap or detergent with water. Use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub the zipper teeth with soapy water, removing any debris from the outside and inside of the zipper teeth. Rinse the soap off the zipper and dry with a soft cloth. This method is only applicable for items that can be washed; for items that shouldn't get wet, opt for a commercial zipper cleaning fluid.
2. Apply Zipper Lubricant
Once the zipper is completely clean, apply lubricant along the length of the zipper teeth according to the product directions. Most zipper lubricants come in a stick you can rub directly on the teeth like a crayon for easy application.
3. Zip It Up!
Run the zipper back and forth a few times to work the lubricant into all the zipper's nooks and crannies and test its movement. After a few zips, your zipper should glide smoothly and freely. If needed, apply more lubricant or wipe away any excess lubricant with your cloth.
Keep your zippers in top shape with these simple tips, and they'll be gliding more easily than ever! Find everything you need to lubricate, repair, or install new zippers at WAWAK, your one-stop shop for all things zipper-related.
